Theory:
The FOGALE Biomass Pro uses the dielectric properties of living cells, that has the advantage of measuring only viable cell density. Unlike optical techniques, the system is not sensitive to gas bubbles, micro-carrier, cell debris and other particles in suspension
With FOGALE expertise in capacitive measurements and the use of a unique patented method, the Biomass Pro measures the viable biomass concentration (Biovolume) independently of cell size variations.
By scanning over the whole frequency range and precise measurements of permittivities, the β-dispersion spectra are determined, the optional Biomass Spectrometer software fit each spectrum on-line to extract the critical frequency fc, the maximal permittivity difference ∆εmax max, and the coefficient α.
These 3 parameters are related to the morphological and physiological state of cells.
Our dielectric spectroscopy experience on animal cell lines brings the technique to a new measurement level. Using a powerful patented method, the optional Advanced Cell Analyser software calculates the cell size from fc. The viable cell count is then calculated using the ∆εmax and the cell size distribution is correlated to the α parameters
